Saving a mothers life at Ubuntu Clinique
May 2025
Meet Claudine, a 29-year-old mother of four. In late March she delivered a healthy baby girl by Caesarean Section at Ubuntu Clinique, then returned home happy and well.
Three weeks later, she came back to Ubuntu Clinique with acute pain in her right hand, having lost circulation in her fingers. The team at Ubuntu Clinique provided her the care they could for Claudine’s gangrene infection, unfortunately the infection was too severe, she faced partial amputation of her severely infected hand. For this, she was transferred 60 km by Ubuntu Clinique ambulance to the capital, Bujumbura.
Ubuntu Clinique was able to cover Claudine’s bill of 700,000 BIF* for Ubuntu’s services and made a down-payment of 500,000 BIF for consultations and tests in Bujumbura. But it wasn’t enough. Three hospitals rejected her because she did not have more money for the treatment and surgery. Her only option was to return to Ubuntu Clinique. Where would she get the additional 7,000,000 BIF ($3262 CAD) needed for the surgery?
Thankfully, a Christian Services International representative (long-time supporters) agreed to pay for half of Claudine's bill. She underwent surgery in Bujumbura and was recovering well. Then she got another infection that required another amputation of more of her arm. Despite this unfortunate setback, Claudine’s baby is in good health, and her family is thankful. Hand-in-hand with Ubuntu Clinique, your generous donations and prayers change the future for mothers like Claudine. A second surgery is another $3262 Cdn, money that Ubuntu Clinique does not have. We are praying for another generous donor.
Jackson Nahayo (Ubuntu founder) relayed this story to Janet Schmidt, chair of the Canadian Ubuntu Board.
